Over the years, there have been several characters that have taken up the mantle of The Flash.

  • The First Flash, Jay Garrick, first appeared in Flash Comics #1. That series ran for 104 issues from 1940-1949 after which it was cancelled. For many years, he continued to appear in the pages of The Flash and Justice Society of America as the original speedster.
  • Ten years later, superhero comics were coming back in vogue and DC decided to revive The Flash (along with several others of their golden age heroes). So in 1959, a new series entitled The Flash picked up where Flash Comics had left off, with issue #105, but starring an all new Flash, Barry Allen. This series ran until issue 350 (1985) at which time Barry Allen died in the pages of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
  • Wally West, who had been Kid Flash, took up the mantle and became the third Flash. The Flash (vol 2) was launched in 1987. The series ran for 230 issues until 2006, when Wally West and his family disappeared into the speed force in the pages of Infinite Crisis.
  • Bart Allen (who had been Impulse, and the second Kid Flash) became the fourth Flash. His series, Flash: The Fastest Man Alive, ran for one year (13 issues) until he too was killed.
  • At the same time, Wally West and his family made a return in the pages of Justice League of America: The Lightning Saga (2007) and Wally continued as the Flash - The Flash (vol 2) resuming where it had left off with issue #231.
  • In the Mean Time, Bart Allen (Flash IV) was brought back to life and de-aged in the pages of Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds and resumed the role of Kid Flash. Barry Allen (Flash II) was also resurrected in the pages of Final Crisis (2009) and The Flash: Rebirth (2010). The Flash (vol 2) ended with issue #247 to make way for a new title, The Flash (vol 3), which starred Barry and Wally and ran for one year (12 issues).
  • In 2011, the history of the DC universe was rebooted in the pages of the miniseries Fashpoint. In the wake of the reboot, Barry Allen has his own title again, The Flash (vol 4), Bart is still Kid Flash and is a regular in Teen Titans (vol 4). Jay once again exists as the Flash of an alternate reality, and Wally has appeared in storylines set in the future.
